[ARCHIVED] Extreme Heat Warning

An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for the region by US National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington. Maximum heat indices are expected to be around 110 degrees. Outside of the warning, it will still be hot over the next several days. Heat and humidity will increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Follow these tips to stay safe during heat waves.

HYDRATE

Your body needs liquid to function and part of that is sweating! Sweat (although not the most pleasant) is your body’s best defense against heat.

TAKE BREAKS

Find some shade or rest in the cool AC between trips outside.

SNACK

Fuel your body with salty snacks to improve water absorption and retention. Drinking water without consuming salt can lead to dangerous side effects—balance is key!

WEAR SUN PROTECTION

Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, skin coverings… you know the drill. Heat is scary…but so is sun sickness.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT ILLNESS

Heat is no joke. Rest, hydrate, seek shade, and DO NOT hesitate to call for help; the Sheriff's Office and Fire, Rescue are ready to assist. Be aware of the signs for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat Exhaustion Symptoms

  • ️Dizziness
  • ️Thirst
  • ️Heavy sweating
  • ️Nausea
  • ️Weakness

Act fast and move to a cooler area, loosen clothing, sip cool water and seek medical assistance if these symptoms do not improve.

Heat Stroke Symptoms

  • Confusion
  • ️Dizziness
  • ️Loss of consciousness

Act fast and call 911, then move to a cooler area, loosen clothing, remove extra layers and apply water or ice to the skin to cool body temperature.
