What is Child Protective Services?

The goal of Child Protective Services (CPS) is to identify, assess & provide services to children and families to protect children, preserve families whenever possible & prevent further maltreatment. Child Protective Services is non-punitive in its approach and is directed toward enabling families to provide adequate care for their children.

Child Abuse and Foster Care Prevention

Includes services to families who have no current, valid CPS referral but whose children may be at risk for maltreatment and subsequent placement in the foster care system. These families may have been the subject of a CPS referral but whose case was determined to be invalid or assessed at low to moderate risk.

What constitutes a valid report of child abuse?

  • The alleged victim is under the age of 18 years old,
  • The alleged abuser is in a caretaking role,
  • The alleged abuse or neglect meets the definition of abuse or neglect as defined by the CPS laws, regulations & policy, and
  • The King George Department of Social Services has jurisdiction to respond to the report.

Adult Protective Services

What is Adult Protective Services?

Adult Protective Services (APS) receives and investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults 60 years of age or older and incapacitated adults age 18 or older. If protective services are needed and accepted by the individual, local APS workers may arrange for a wide variety of health, housing, social & legal services to stop the mistreatment or prevent further mistreatment. Services offered may include home-based care, transportation, adult day services, adult foster care, nutrition services & legal intervention to protect the adult. Services may also be arranged for individuals in emergencies who cannot consent to services.
